A closing for transfer of title of the Rutherford Parks Library from the present owners to the Heights National Alumni Association is scheduled for June 3, 2013 with possession on or before July 1, 2013. This closing will finalize the plan of purchase of the 101 year old library which had its genesis at the July 14, 2012 meeting of the Board of Directors of Heights National Alumni Association. Thereafter, on August 25, 2012, the matter was again placed on the agenda of the Board of Directors.

On August 24, 2012, the Alumni Association was advised by EMC Structural Engineers, P.C. of the structural soundness of the library and its structural integrity. The report and photographs in support of same were shared with the Board of Directors. The matter was passed for further consideration at the Homecoming meeting of the Board of Directors on October 6, 2012 when the Board voted to pursue the fundraising drive of $500,000 to be utilized for purchase ($350,000) and renovation ($150,000).

The Board announced its position at the Alumni luncheon that same day and before the Homecoming weekend had ended, some $85,000 had been raised in cash and pledges.

The alumni was notified by mail on November 8, 2012, of the above events and the option to purchase was extended to April 15, 2013. The present owners, pursuant to the option, reduced the purchase price to $340,000, and upon acceptance of the option one week prior to the April 15, 2013 deadline agreed to accept $330,000.

The alumni and friends of Castle Heights Military Academy had raised $232,957 in cash. The Board of Directors had agreed to loan $100,000 to the venture and an Executive Committee selected by the Board of Directors was utilized to steer the matter to a final conclusion of purchase.

At the present time, the Alumni Association is prepared to take title to the Rutherford Parks Library on June 3, 2013, and pay the sellers the sum of $330,000. Our obligation is to repay the Heights National Alumni Association the $100,000. There are still outstanding pledges of $62,634 which are due over time. The matter of renovation of the library is still on the agenda and in that regard, numerous offers of in-kind assistance have already been received by the Alumni Association.

A cadre of former cadets from the Class of 1975 are organizing a fundraising event to be held at the Old Lebanon Woolen Mills in Lebanon, Tennessee on August 3, 2013. This event will be highlighted by Jim Beam bourbon tasting, by Fred Noe, seventh generation Master Distiller of Jim Beam and member of the Class of 1975.

The Alumni Associationís objective is the restore the scholarship fund to its previous amount of $200,000 by repaying same from outstanding pledges ($62,634) and future gifts and to gradually restore the interior of the library to its previous state.

The fundraising drive to recapture the ownership of Rutherford Parks Library was an outstanding success. The Heights spirit of old was revitalized through the generous contributions of hundreds of friends and alumni. With the acquisition of the library, we are back on the Hill and lie in the very shadow of Main Building, the circle and all those military formations where we met often each day.

With this posting is a color photograph of the Rutherford Parks Library. Architecturally, itís a miniature of the buildings where we took our meals, met the Headmaster, the Commandant and the Superintendent of the School. Its Castilian architecture, Gothic entranceway and multi-colored glass dome are a treasure. It is reminiscent of the buildings we lived in and studied in. It will house many of our memories, artifacts and lore.

This October 12, 2013, at Homecoming, the library will be open and although it will lack the touches of renovation, to friends of Castle Heights Military Academy and its alumni, we bid you welcome. Please look it over, go inside and admire the beautiful ceiling and the architecture. It is ours once again, given initially to memorialize the life of an early alumnus. Over one hundred years later, it stands in the midst of where a great Military Academy stood to develop through its dedicated faculty, the bodies and minds of thousands of cadets. Please continue to support the Heights National Alumni Association and its endeavors of scholarship and tribute.

Thanks to you, Ted, and all the alumni who have helped to make the purchase of the Library a reality.
